In general, it has been proved that an experienced person can accomplish the task with a perfection. With this basic principle we must analyze the Indian society. I will discuss about the roll of a senior citizen in improvising the culture of Indian society. Now the person reaching the age of 60 yrs is categorized as senior citizen, in India, but I observe and feel that Senior citizens must be further categorized into one more group after 75 yrs as SENIOR senior citizens. Life span has increased and the available comforts and living standards keeps the majority of people energetic to perform, even after superannuation age, for a decade or more.
I have experienced that a general question is put to every senior citizen by his friends and known fellows in society " What is the engagement" now. I feel this question is irrelevant to a person, who has lived the disciplined life as a student or in a profession, because I believe that every wise citizen of the country thinks and remains concerned about the society, Nation and Dharma he preach in addition to his/her family matters and its development. Mostly all such people complete their family responsibilities within service period and they should devote the second inning of the life to society, happily.
It will strengthen your bonds with the children and family because you will give them the room to make decisions of their own and gain the experience of life to live life with perfection and simultaneously continue to do good Karma by working in society, while being with the family.
It is said that " We are not given good life or bad life. We are given life and it is up to you to make it good or bad". The gesture to serve in eradication of evils in society ,educating the people about the menace of cast-ism prevalent, Environmental preservation, Inculcating the habit of religious i-e scientific way of living in family while following Vedic path, educating the under privileged, help in improving the life of tribal people, Work within microscopic families and young professionals in educating them values of Dharma and togetherness and many more, depending upon the area you reside. I believe that one must come out from his home and lawn and know his neighbor, colony, make interaction with people surrounding you and make them feel you are concerned and simultaneously be vigilant about the affairs happening within your location. One must search the people of own ideology within the area and work and serve as a team for all good. After some period you will feel the difference and satisfaction in your self. This is the primary responsibility of a good citizen also.
One can take the help of respective Government organizations, NGO,s etc in case of need but the best and organised way to serve in the society in varied fields must be learnt from Rashtriya Swayam-Sewak Sangh, the samajik sangathan, of the society for the society, actively and in an organised way serving in about more than 150 sectors of society and all senior citizens can be the part of this, about 100 yrs old worlds biggest social organization to devote their time to serve society in one of the interesting sector to improve the social culture among the people of country. The age old civilization of Hindus teaches us that the ebullient person is capable to forgive because He has the only right to do so. He owes the power to hold the society as the earth has. Every citizen of this great country, and in particular senior citizens, must own the responsibility to serve in strengthening this cultivated society, were the need is felt. Senior citizens have the capability and capacity to move forward this society with gesture of love and togetherness, opulently. They can serve to achieve the goal of improving social culture, sapiently. VANDEMATRAM.
